Path of Exile 2 asks a lot more from new players than most action RPGs do. The first few hours can feel rough, and that's kind of the point. You begin with weak gear, limited tools, and a whole lot of enemies that can absolutely flatten you if you rush in blind. Over the current early access campaign, six acts push you from a scrappy exile into someone who's finally ready to think about maps at around level 60. If you like planning ahead, trading, or grabbing useful resources without wasting time, plenty of players end up checking places like U4GM along the way, especially once builds start demanding specific gear and currency to really come alive.
Getting through the first acts
Act 1 starts in Clearfell, and it doesn't take long to realise this campaign isn't handing out free wins. One of the first things worth chasing is The Mad Wolf quest. It opens up access to early skill gems and gives you the Salvage Bench, which becomes a core part of your progress. By Act 2, the trip toward the City of Seven Waters starts to test your build a bit harder. A lot of players hit a wall here because they've ignored movement, defence, or the ascendancy trial routes hidden around the wrecks. Then Act 3 steps in and punishes sloppy gearing. If your fire resistance is still poor when you reach the Vaal areas, you'll feel it straight away. After that, the campaign keeps moving through the Karui islands, then into Sarn, before Act 6 closes things out with the Perennial King.
How to move faster without bricking your run
One common mistake is trying to full-clear every zone. Don't. It sounds safe, but it drags your run down and usually doesn't pay off. You're better off sticking close to the main path, then breaking away only for passive skill rewards, spirit upgrades, and ascendancy content. A simple way to read zones is to trace the outer edge first, since exits and side routes often branch from the perimeter. After that, cut back inward and clean up rares if they're easy to reach. You'll also notice the campaign feels smoother when your level stays slightly ahead of the area, not massively over it. And yes, Quicksilver flask uptime matters more than some people think. If you're walking too much, you're losing time for no good reason.
Loot, salvage, and resistance checks
Gear progression in Path of Exile 2 has a more hands-on feel than a lot of players expect. You can't just hope for one lucky drop and coast. Salvaging is a big deal, and socketed items are often more useful than they look because they can turn into Artificer's Orbs. Those orbs help keep your gear slots functional, which matters a lot once elemental damage ramps up. For most players, capping resistances is the first real gearing milestone, not some luxury for later. If your resists are low, bosses and elite packs will expose it fast. That's especially true in the later acts, where incoming damage spikes and bad gear choices start to snowball.
What changes once the campaign is over
After Act 6, the focus shifts hard toward efficiency. Early maps are where clear speed begins to matter more than almost anything else, so it makes sense to juice basic map tiers and build around smooth farming before obsessing over boss damage. A second character can level much faster too, especially if you've got stash support and some outside help. A lot of veterans rush that process because once map progression starts, resources open everything up. If you're trying to smooth out that transition, stacking up POE 2 Currency early can make your upgrades, crafting attempts, and resistance fixes feel a lot less painful while your build starts to hit its stride.
